Anesthesiology News - Anesthesiologists Take on Central Role In Stroke Care
Stroke is merely one part of the neuroanesthesiologists’ workload, but with the number of patients growing and the time involved in their care, for Dr. Abramowicz and her colleagues it is becoming increasingly significant. “These procedures are complex and tie us up for hours. We have to show up quickly and the equipment has to be ready. This is akin to having a cesarean section room ready—within 30 minutes—and this is completely changing the way we operate as a group.”
Dr. Abramowicz hired two neuroanesthesiologists in 2010 to take her team to the current five. She is recruiting another, but finding well-trained clinicians has not been easy. “Young people don’t consider this a career path very often but there’s going to be a growing need for these services,” she said. “I don’t know where we’re going to get these people from.”
